The Bay Area is witnessing a significant shift in work patterns post-pandemic, with full-time remote work seeing a dramatic decline. According to a recent survey by the Bay Area Council and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, only 11% of employers reported having full-time remote employees in February, down from 32% in October 2021.
The Rise of Hybrid Work Schedules
Hybrid work schedules, which blend time spent working from home and in the office, have become the new norm. The survey highlights that 63% of workers were on hybrid schedules by February, up from 44% in October 2021. Most employees prefer coming into the office Tuesdays through Thursdays, making these days the most bustling in terms of office attendance and traffic.
Impact on Commuting and Transportation
With more employees returning to the office, even if partially, traffic across some Bay Area bridges has returned or exceeded pre-pandemic levels on days when workers leave their home offices. Additionally, 46% of employees now use transit to commute at least some of the time, a notable increase from 35% in January 2024.
The Future of Work in the Bay Area
The survey suggests that these trends are stabilizing, with 84% of businesses reporting they've adopted permanent, long-term attendance policies. Larger companies, especially those with over 10,000 employees, are more likely to anticipate further changes, whereas smaller businesses are leaning towards maintaining their current schedules.
