About the role

All those years in building control, and a Class 1 or 2 next to your name.

That number decides what you get paid and how seriously you get taken. Your experience doesn't get a vote.

If you worked in this job it does. This is a Principal Designer role where you're judged on what you've done, not the class you were given. You sit level with everyone else, whatever their registration says.

And it pays like it. £70,000 to £95,000 depending on experience, with a company and individual bonus on top. For most people in building control that's a jump of £15,000 or more. That's the mortgage overpaid every month, or the extension you keep putting off, before the bonus even lands.

Holiday is 29 days plus bank holidays, including the Christmas shutdown and your birthday off. Private healthcare on top, and not the cheap kind: private hospital treatment, MRI and CT scans done privately, drugs fully funded including ones the NHS won't pay for, and a private GP on video at any hour.

Your registration doesn't go stale either. The business runs its own registered building control service and you can be seconded onto it to keep building your portfolio and maintain your classifications.

You'd work from home, five days a week, 37.5 hours. No more days measured in service stations, lunch eaten in the car between inspections, and home after the kids are in bed. When you do want people around you, there are places to meet colleagues for the days you fancy going in.

The interview process is short. A relaxed Teams chat first, then a meeting with the directors. No kind of technical test.

What you'll need: an experienced Registered Building Inspector at Class 1 or 2, with a good working knowledge across the approved documents, and happy to front a client meeting. This isn't a trainee role.
