Head of Creative Services
Company Overview
LOCOMOTIVE is an award-winning digital and creative agency with offices in Raleigh, North Carolina and Galway, Ireland. Our global teams are driven by a passion for innovation and excellence in marketing strategy and execution, empowering our clientâs brands to reach their fullest potential through strategic growth initiatives and cutting-edge solutions.
If you are interested in working in a fast-paced, ambitious environment, which places an emphasis on strategic thinking and long-term customer value, we would love to hear from you.
Our Web, Research & Development, Data Science, Design and Digital teams work together to build effective websites, platforms and tools for our clients. We value technical quality, practical innovation, clear communication and taking ownership of the outcomes we deliver.
Why this role exists
LOCOMOTIVE builds its own software, tools, and solutions internally. Our growing body of AI-powered web work and interactive content has reached a point where it needs a dedicated owner. This person sits within the Design team and works closely with Technology/R&D and Web Development to shape the user interfaces we build, and to extend that work into client-facing versions of our tools where a commercial opportunity exists.
This role is separate from the wider Design teamâs day-to-day client work (brand, campaign, video, social, and print), which continues as it does today. Until now, design work for LOCOMOTIVEâs internal tools has been picked up ad hoc alongside client projects. That includes the design system, component library, and the user-facing documentation that keeps everything on brand. This role takes primary ownership of all of it.
The role
Youâll primarily work on client AI-powered website designs, UI/UX, interactive content and interfaces for LOCOMOTIVEâs internally built software, website and tools, as well as the client-facing versions of that software where weâve identified commercial opportunities. Alongside that, youâll shape AI empowered web design work, moving between Figma and HTML to take concepts from first sketch to a build ready state in WordPress, Builder.io, and similar platforms.
Your job is to be the connective tissue between design and UI/UX best practice and the needs of the product or website. Youâll sit within the Design team and report to the Head of Creative Services, giving you a home base in design craft and standards while your day to day focus runs through Technology/R&D and Web Development. Technology in this space moves quickly. AI tooling, design systems, and web capabilities are all changing at a pace that rewards curiosity over certainty. Weâre looking for someone who treats that as the interesting part of the job, not a disruption to it: someone who tests new tools before being asked to, questions their own assumptions, and adapts their process as the landscape shifts under them.
What youâll do
- Design UI/UX for LOCOMOTIVEâs internally built software solutions and other tools as the product set grows
- Extend that design work into client facing versions of internal tools where a commercial opportunity has been identified, adapting for external users and use cases
- Design AI-powered web experiences end to end, using Figma and prompt-based design tools to turn concepts directly into build-ready HTML/CSS for implementation in WordPress, Builder.io, and similar platforms
- Collaborate with Technology/R&D on product direction, feasibility, and the technical constraints that shape good design decisions
- Work directly with Web Development on implementation, ensuring designs translate cleanly into build and holding quality through that handoff
- Maintain design consistency across LOCOMOTIVEâs internal tools, working toward a shared design language and reusable component library, style guide and clear usage documentation so software developers can build on brand without needing a full design pass each time
- Apply core UX practice to every project: information architecture, interaction design, core usability principles, and accessibility from the first draft rather than as a late pass
- Contribute to or run usability testing where relevant, and use the findings to iterate rather than treat first drafts as final
- Document design decisions and specs clearly enough for software developers to build from without repeated back and forth, including states, edge cases, and responsive behavior
- Stay ahead of AI and web design tooling, testing new platforms and workflows and bringing back a business case for whatâs worth adopting
- Represent design thinking in product and technical conversations where no dedicated designer would otherwise be in the room
- Create working HTML/CSS prototypes using prompt-based design tools, taking ideas beyond static Figma layouts before development begins
- Define reusable design tokens, components, states, and interaction patterns that can be shared across Figma, coded interfaces, and AI development workflows
- Maintain alignment between the Figma library and implemented component system as both evolve
- Develop prompting patterns, reference examples, and design-system guidance that help AI tools generate consistent, on-brand interfaces
- Review AI-generated interfaces critically and refine them to meet LOCOMOTIVEâs standards for design quality, accessibility, responsiveness, and usability
This role carries the same design standards as the rest of the Design team, applied to product and AI-powered web work specifically.
- Prompt-based design and prototyping: using AI tools to move rapidly from an idea or Figma concept to working HTML/CSS prototypes, then reviewing and refining the output for usability, accessibility, responsiveness, brand consistency, and implementation quality
- User centered design: grounding decisions in user needs and, where possible, validating them with real feedback rather than assumption
- Accessibility: designing to WCAG 2.2 AA as a baseline, with color contrast, keyboard navigation, and screen reader support considered from the start, not retrofitted
- Design systems: building and governing reusable components, design tokens, patterns, and documentation across Figma and code, ensuring that generated interfaces remain consistent and can be reused by both developers and AI-assisted workflows
- Responsive design: designing and validating across desktop, tablet, and mobile breakpoints as standard practice, not an afterthought
- Clear documentation: annotating flows, states, and edge cases so handoff to Technology/R&D and Web Development doesnât rely on verbal explanation
- Organized files: keeping Figma libraries structured, versioned, and easy for teammates to pick up or build on
- Iteration over perfection: treating early designs as a starting point, testing assumptions, and refining based on feedback and, where available, usage data
- 5+ years of experience in UI/UX or product design
- Demonstrable experience using prompt-based design or prototyping tools to produce working web interfaces, with an understanding of how to guide, evaluate, and refine generated HTML/CSS
- Experience using structured design systems and component libraries as constraints for AI-generated design work
- Strong Figma and HTML/CSS skills, with the ability to use prompt-based design tools to create, inspect, and refine working interfaces, not just static mockups
- Able to recognize and correct poor generated output, including inconsistent components, weak responsive behavior, and unnecessary complexity
- Solid grounding in UX fundamentals: information architecture, interaction design, usability principles, and accessibility standards
- Experience building or working within a design system or component library, and keeping it consistent as it grows
- Experience designing for internal tools or platforms, ideally alongside experience adapting internal products for external or commercial use
- Genuine curiosity about AI and emerging web technology, with examples of tools or techniques youâve adopted early rather than waited to be told about
- Comfort holding design quality across multiple concurrent projects, and flexing into other design work when the team needs it
- Strong collaboration instincts: youâll spend a lot of your time with data scientists and developers rather than other designers, and need to communicate design decisions clearly to both
Youâll sit within the Design team and report to the Head of Creative Services, while operating day to day as LOCOMOTIVEâs dedicated design partner for product and web. Expect close, regular collaboration with data scientists, developers, and product owners on your core work, and with the rest of the Design team when capacity allows you to pick up other briefs. This is a role for someone who wants to define what good design ownership looks like inside a technology function, without losing the connection to a broader design practice.
