The Role
We are looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer – Python Specialist to join one of our growing engineering teams supporting a large-scale, secure UK public-sector technology programme.
This is a software engineering-focused role with Python development at its core, alongside AWS, Kubernetes, microservices and API integration.
You will design, develop, test and maintain production-quality software, automation and platform services supporting secure and scalable cloud environments. Working within an agile multidisciplinary team, you will collaborate with software engineers, DevOps engineers, architects and security specialists to deliver reliable technology solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Software Engineering
- Design and develop Python applications, backend services, automation tools, microservices and REST APIs.
- Develop maintainable, scalable and testable production-quality software.
- Build integrations with internal platforms, external services and APIs.
- Apply modern Python development practices, including type hints, asynchronous programming and robust error handling.
- Participate in technical design, code reviews and continuous improvement.
- Provide technical guidance and support to other engineers where appropriate.
AWS & Kubernetes
- Develop software and automation integrating with AWS services and APIs.
- Use boto3 to interact with AWS services including EC2, S3, IAM, CloudWatch and Lambda.
- Develop automation and tooling for Kubernetes environments.
- Work with Kubernetes APIs, containerised applications and microservices.
- Support secure, scalable and reliable cloud-native services.
Platform & Enterprise Integration
- Develop integrations with LDAP/Active Directory, HashiCorp Vault, Jira/Confluence and other enterprise platforms.
- Build secure integrations for authentication, credentials and secrets management.
- Develop automation to improve platform operations and engineering efficiency.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues across applications, integrations and cloud environments.
Testing & CI/CD
- Develop unit and integration tests using tools such as pytest and unittest.
- Apply automated testing, code coverage and code quality practices.
- Integrate testing and linting into CI/CD pipelines.
- Work with GitHub Actions, GitLab CI or similar technologies.
- Participate in code reviews and promote modern software engineering practices.
Go (Not Essential)
- Contribute to Go/Golang development where required, including APIs, CLI tools and automation.
- Apply appropriate testing, error handling and code quality practices.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Active SC Clearance
- Strong commercial experience as a Senior Software Engineer / Python Developer.
- Experience working on UK Government programmes or within secure/regulatory environments.
- Strong Python development experience building production software.
- Experience developing backend systems, microservices, automation and REST APIs.
- Strong experience with AWS, particularly boto3 and AWS APIs.
- Experience with Kubernetes and containerised applications.
- Experience working with microservice architectures.
- Strong understanding of software testing, code quality and version control.
- Experience with Git, code reviews and CI/CD.
- Experience working in agile multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience with Go/Golang.
- Experience with HashiCorp Vault.
- Experience with LDAP, Active Directory or OpenLDAP.
- Experience with Jira/Confluence APIs.
- Experience with Python libraries such as ldap3, hvac and kubernetes-client.
- Experience with tools such as pytest, coverage.py, black, flake8 and mypy.
- Experience with GitHub Actions or GitLab CI.
