About Amber Labs

At Amber Labs, we’re a people-first technology consultancy delivering secure, scalable and user-centred digital solutions across UK Central Government. We work on complex digital transformation programmes that genuinely make a difference, bringing together talented people across design, research, technology, delivery and business analysis.

We’re proud of our supportive, collaborative culture, where people are encouraged to share ideas, challenge thinking and develop their expertise.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Senior Service Designer to join our team and work on complex government digital transformation programmes. You’ll take an end-to-end view of services, understanding how users, people, processes, technology, data and policy come together.

You’ll use research and evidence to identify problems and opportunities, then help multidisciplinary teams design better, more accessible and user-centred services. This role is particularly suited to someone who enjoys working on complex operational or internal government services, including case management, workflow and services involving multiple systems and teams.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Designing and mapping end-to-end services
  • Creating user journeys, service blueprints and process maps
  • Working across Discovery, Alpha, Beta and Live
  • Facilitating workshops with users, stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams
  • Working closely with User Researchers to turn research into actionable recommendations
  • Identifying pain points, dependencies and opportunities for improvement
  • Managing and influencing senior and non-technical stakeholders
  • Supporting Agile multidisciplinary teams
  • Developing prototypes and iterating designs based on evidence and feedback
  • Applying UCD, GDS Service Standards and Government Design Principles
  • Championing accessibility and inclusive design, including WCAG
  • Making complex processes, systems and services easy to understand and communicate

What We’re Looking For

Essential:

  • Strong Service Design experience within complex digital transformation programmes
  • Experience working within UK Government / Central Government
  • Strong understanding of GDS Service Standard and Government Design Principles
  • Experience across Discovery, Alpha, Beta and Live
  • Strong User-Centred Design (UCD) experience
  • Excellent workshop facilitation and stakeholder management skills
  • Experience with service mapping, journey mapping, service blueprints and process mapping
  • Experience working in Agile multidisciplinary teams
  • Prototyping experience using tools such as Figma, Miro or similar
  • Good understanding of accessibility, inclusive design and WCAG
  • Ability to communicate complex processes and systems clearly
  • Active SC Clearance – essential

We'd Especially Like to See

  • Internal or operational government services
  • Complex case management or workflow systems
  • Mapping front-to-back services across people, processes, technology, data and policy
  • Multiple teams, systems or government departments
  • Legacy technology and complex organisational environments
  • Supporting GDS/service assessments
  • GOV.UK Design System or Home Office Design System
  • GOV.UK Prototype Kit, HTML/CSS
  • Previous experience with the Home Office or another Central Government department

Why Amber Labs?

This is a great opportunity to join a consultancy where people and collaboration genuinely matter.

You’ll be working alongside experienced professionals on meaningful government programmes, with the freedom to bring your ideas to the table and the support of a team around you.

What You'll Get at Amber Labs

You'll join a consultancy where ownership, curiosity and collaboration are central to how we work. Our teams work on programmes where quality, security and delivery really matter, alongside experienced specialists across data, cloud, digital and architecture.

We offer:

  • Permanent or 12-month FTC employment
  • Private healthcare (Bupa)
  • Company pension
  • 25 days annual leave plus UK bank holidays
  • Learning & development budget
  • Perkbox rewards
  • Flexible working
  • Opportunities to work on complex, high-impact transformation programmes
  • A collaborative environment with genuine opportunities to develop your expertise

If you’re a Senior Service Designer who enjoys solving complex problems, understanding how services really work and creating better experiences for users, we’d love to hear from you.
