President Donald Trump has delivered a stinging critique of remote work, asserting that federal employees logging in from home are likely only working 10% of the time and might even hold two jobs.
When signing a series of executive orders, he reacted to a judge blocking Elon Musk's plan to incentivize federal workers to leave their positions, stating, "I got elected on making government better, more efficient and smaller."
Trump emphasized that the buyout offered to federal workers is generous, with over 60,000 former staffers signing up. He also reiterated his belief that employees should return to the office, claiming, "Nobody’s going to work from home, they’re going to be going out, they’re gonna play tennis, they’re gonna play golf."
He believes that many federal workers are balancing two jobs, stating, "They’ll be collecting a federal government check and they’ll be working two jobs. That’s big trouble for them."
According to an August 2024 report by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), more than 55% of the Department of Education’s staff work remotely.
What are Trump’s WFH habits?
Research indicates that flexible working has significantly aided mothers in the workforce. A study from the Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution found that approximately 25% of women with children reported working from home in early 2023.
Despite his criticisms, Trump himself is known to have enjoyed 261 rounds of golf during his presidency, often returning to the course shortly after taking office.
In his second term, Trump continues to make time for leisure activities, including a recent round with Tiger Woods before attending the Super Bowl.
Marc Andreessen, a venture capitalist, noted Trump’s tendency to engage with regular people on the golf course, highlighting a unique aspect of his leadership style.
