Scammers are increasingly targeting job seekers with fake work-from-home offers, and the schemes are becoming harder to detect. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has reported a surge in employment scams this May, particularly "reshipping scams" where victims receive and reship stolen merchandise, unknowingly aiding credit card theft.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Quick interview process with minimal screening
- Unusual job descriptions like inspecting and reshipping packages
- Requests for upfront payment for equipment with a promise of reimbursement
Whitney Adkins, BBB director of communications for the greater Kentucky region, warns: "If you encounter a company, especially work from home, that requires you to pay up front for equipment, that is another big red flag." A recent victim lost several hundred dollars after being told to order equipment and promised reimbursement.
Since 2020, the rise in remote work has been exploited by scammers. To verify a job offer, check the company's legitimacy on BBB Scam Tracker.
