Job Description

Posted on: August 28, 2026

Location: Warrington/Market Harborough/Remote

About The Role

As Principal Project Manager, you will lead the delivery of large and strategically important environmental projects, working closely with colleagues across ecology and other specialist teams. You will guide project governance, planning, risk management, client engagement and commercial performance, while supporting colleagues to deliver consistent, high quality work. You will be trusted to make clear decisions, build strong relationships and bring people together around shared outcomes. This role is well suited to someone who enjoys solving complex problems, developing others and helping a respected consultancy continue to improve and grow.

What You’ll Be Doing

You will take a leading role in the successful delivery of complex projects, with responsibility for quality, relationships, risk and commercial outcomes. This will include:

  • Leading complex, multi-disciplinary projects from planning through to delivery.
  • Setting up and overseeing project governance, controls, reporting and decision making.
  • Managing project finances, forecasting, fee recovery, profitability and commercial risk.
  • Acting as a senior point of contact for clients, partners, landowners and other stakeholders.
  • Identifying and resolving complex risks, programme issues and delivery challenges.
  • Coordinating internal and external teams so that work is well planned, efficient and joined up.
  • Mentoring colleagues, sharing knowledge and supporting high standards across the team.

What We Are Looking For

We welcome applications from people who can bring a thoughtful, organised and collaborative approach to project leadership. You may have gained your experience in consultancy, client side, public sector or another relevant setting.

  • Degree or recognised qualification in ecology, environmental science, project management or another related discipline.
  • Strong experience of managing complex projects, preferably within ecology, planning, environmental consultancy or a related field.
  • A clear understanding of project governance, reporting, risk management and commercial delivery.
  • Experience of creating and using Power BI reports, or similar project reporting systems, would be desirable.
  • Confidence in working with clients and stakeholders, including in complex or sensitive situations.
  • Good knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, planning policy and assessment processes, or the ability to apply related knowledge quickly.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain issues clearly and support good decision making.
  • A commitment to quality, safety, learning and continuous improvement.
  • A supportive leadership style that helps colleagues do their best work and develop their skills.
