We are looking for a full-time editorial assistant, working across the SMP and Griffin imprints. The position will support one Executive Editor and one Editorial Director of Nonfiction. The ideal candidate will be able to efficiently manage a diverse set of responsibilities, and has an active interest in adult upmarket/commercial nonfiction and fiction. What You'll Do

  • Maintaining publication schedules and departmental databases, and otherwise tracking the publication process for anywhere between 25 and 50 titles per year
  • Communicating with authors and agents throughout the publication process, as well as acting as an interdepartmental liaison
  • Logging agented submissions, evaluating manuscripts, writing reader reports, and sending rejection letters
  • Drafting contract and check requests, generating sales reports, and tracking payments and invoices.
  • Writing flap copy, title information sheets, and catalog copy.
  • Assistance with special projects, research, and compiling various reports and intradepartmental information as needed
  • Basic administrative support, including schedule coordination, travel, and expense reports.

What You'll Bring

  • Excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and exceptional time management.
  • A genuine interest in book publishing: most of what you work on will be fiction and narrative nonfiction for the adult market, and a familiarity with the market is essential.
  • Ability to think creatively and critically, particularly in collaborative environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to prioritize, set and meet deadlines, and work independently
  • Strong work-ethic and initiative.

Experience Needed

  • 0-1 years; this is an entry-level position
  • Preference for internships in the publishing industry or editorial experience in an academic setting
  • Candidates with alternative (non-publishing industry-based) office experience are welcome
