Job Description

About Gradeo
Gradeo is a fast-growing edtech specialising in online assessment. We’re on a mission to transform how educators assess and how candidates sit assessments through technology. We combine rigorous, quality-assured test instruments with cutting-edge technology.
Since launching in March 2025, almost 400 schools now choose Gradeo for their online exams and exam preparation. We operate an end-to-end assessment platform that is entering a critical evolution phase.
We are looking for two ambitious, high-agency Senior Engineers to join our lean team. These roles are for builders who wants to ship code that matters, take ownership of complex technical challenges, and see their work used by thousands of students immediately.
The Role
We are scaling to meet the demands of our upcoming feature roadmap and platform upgrade. In this hands-on position, you will work directly with the Founder and the technical team to accelerate delivery and stabilise our infrastructure.
You will be responsible for both improving our established platform and helping to build the architecture to support our need to scale. You won't just be picking up tickets; you will be optimising our "path to production," hardening our security, and ensuring that we ship robust, testable code every sprint.
This is a fully remote role that can be performed from anywhere in Australia, aligning to Sydney working hours. We are a collaborative team that synchronises with daily standups, regular video calls, and remote pair programming sessions. We are looking for someone who values impact and "getting it done" while ensuring solid quality, performance, and security. The ideal candidate will be a technology generalist who thrives in a fast-moving startup environment.
Key responsibilitiesHands-On Development & Delivery
- Ship high-quality code across the full stack. You will work in TypeScript with NestJS, Next.js, Postgres, Temporal.io, Socket.io, PostHog, Azure and more.
- Contribute to both backend and frontend development. We value 'T-shaped' engineers who are comfortable across the stack, even if you lean towards one side.
- Drive the feature roadmap by translating business requirements into working software.
- Take ownership of critical features from design to deployment, ensuring they are robust, scalable, and user centric.
Architecture & Code Quality
- Help improve the architecture of the platform, ensuring seamless data flow and user experience.
- Champion code hygiene. You will write clean, documented code and help maintain a repo that is easy for others to work in.
- Ensure rigorous testing protocols are in place for mission-critical functions (e.g., exam saving logic).
Security & Compliance
- Fit into a "Security First" mindset. You understand the importance of data sovereignty and PII protection in the education sector.
- Support our compliance roadmap to ST4S by maintaining up-to-date technical documentation.
About you
- You are a true full stack engineer: You understand how to build complex applications that perform at scale.
- You love learning and strive for simple design: You have a love of simple, easy to understand, easy to test code. You will always be curious about new techniques for the craft of software engineering, and teaching what you learn to others.
- You are purpose-driven: Prior experience in education is not required, but we’re looking for someone who believes technology can transform assessment and learning.
- You are ambitious, proactive & collaborative: You thrive in small, fast-paced environments where you are trusted to manage your own time and output. You don't need to be micro-managed, but you keep your teammates and other stakeholders in the loop and raise any issues blocking progress.
- You communicate clearly: You can explain technical risks to non-technical stakeholders and collaborate effectively in a remote setting. You use collaboration tools such as Jira to make your work visible to the team and write documentation to support knowledge sharing and compliance requirements.
- You meet our compliance obligations: You must hold or be willing to obtain a Working With Children Check, and pass a NSW Police Background Check.
To apply, submit your application via LinkedIn or send your CV and a brief cover letter outlining a complex technical problem you solved recently to careers@gradeo.com.au.
