Software Engineer API's and Integration | Java / TypeScript | AWS | APIs

Permanent, Market+ Salary and Bonus

Location: UK Remote, Home-Based

We're looking for an API Software Engineer to join a growing engineering team responsible for building and evolving a critical API platform sitting between customer-facing applications, third parties and core business systems.

This is a great opportunity for an engineer who enjoys working on APIs, integrations and cloud-native platforms, and wants to play a key role in the evolution from a mature Java-based API platform to a modern TypeScript architecture.

The platform is already live and being used by major third parties, with the next phase focused on expanding the TypeScript architecture, introducing new endpoints and continuing to build a scalable, well-structured API platform.

What you'll be doing

You'll join an engineering team of around 8 developers, working closely with a Delivery Lead and other technical teams.

Your work will include:

  • Designing, developing and maintaining REST APIs used by internal and external customers.
  • Building new functionality using TypeScript and modern API development practices.
  • Helping evolve an existing Java / Maven API platform as the architecture moves increasingly towards TypeScript.
  • Building integrations between external applications, third-party systems and internal platforms.
  • Developing APIs that allow third parties to access product and customer information, retrieve pricing and place orders.
  • Working with OpenAPI standards to design clear, consistent and maintainable APIs.
  • Developing within a containerised, cloud-based environment, with services deployed into clusters.
  • Working with AWS and technologies such as Docker, ECS/Fargate and API Gateway.
  • Writing automated unit, integration and performance tests.
  • Supporting CI/CD pipelines and contributing to a strong DevOps culture.
  • Troubleshooting production issues and improving API performance, reliability and scalability.
  • Contributing to architecture and technical decisions as the API platform continues to evolve.
  • Producing clear technical documentation and sharing knowledge across the team.

The technology

The existing platform has a strong Java / Maven foundation and has been progressively modernised into a containerised cloud environment.

The newer generation of the platform is being developed using TypeScript, with the team now looking to build out this architecture further.

You'll ideally have experience with some of the following:

  • TypeScript or Java
  • RESTful APIs
  • OpenAPI / Swagger
  • JSON
  • AWS
  • Docker / containerisation
  • ECS / Fargate
  • API Gateway

A solid Java background with some TypeScript experience would be a strong fit, as would a TypeScript-focused engineer with a good understanding of API development and modern cloud environments.

What we're looking for

We're particularly interested in engineers who:

  • Have professional experience building APIs and integrations.
  • Understand good API design principles and modern REST/OpenAPI standards.
  • Have experience working with cloud-based, containerised applications.
  • Are comfortable working within an existing architecture while also helping shape what's next.
  • Can break down complex technical ideas and explain them clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Take ownership of their work and care about building well-engineered, maintainable software.

Why this role?

This is an opportunity to join a team where the API platform is central to how customers and third parties interact with the wider technology estate.

You'll be working on a platform that is already live and used externally, while helping shape its next generation, moving towards TypeScript, modern API standards and cloud-native architecture.
