I am working with a leading EPC organisation who is focused on supporting organisations with their energy transition projects. The Mechanical Project Lead will primarily work on Heat Networks, behind-the-meter decarbonisation programmes, and electrolytic hydrogen projects aimed at reducing energy consumption and decarbonising the operations of public, commercial and industrial clients.

In this role, the Mechanical Project Lead will provide technical leadership across business development, engineering, procurement and construction activities. They will hold overall accountability as the UK Mechanical Lead for major decarbonisation and hydrogen EPC projects.

Pre-Construction Responsibilities

  • Review and approve mechanical design documents, ensuring compliance with client and regulatory obligations.
  • Liaise with clients, internal teams and external designers; coordinate with other discipline leads to ensure a fully integrated solution.
  • Contribute to technical risk assessments and value-engineering exercises, ensuring affordability, constructability and operability during design.
  • Develop detailed testing and commissioning specifications and acceptance criteria.
  • Build and maintain relationships with mechanical suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Prepare detailed technical specifications and scopes of work for mechanical packages.
  • Lead technical bid evaluations for supplier and subcontractor selection.
  • Support EPC planning by providing mechanical expertise on timeline, interfaces and prioritisation.

Construction & Commissioning Responsibilities

  • Support the Project Director in delivering Heat Network, decarbonisation and hydrogen EPC projects, providing consistent mechanical expertise.
  • Respond to technical queries from clients and suppliers.
  • Review and approve vendor technical submittals and drawings; participate in design reviews and factory acceptance tests.
  • Conduct site visits to gather feedback, identify improvements and promote a strong safety culture.
  • Ensure all mechanical handover and commissioning documentation is correctly prepared.

Required Experience

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in estimating, design, construction and commissioning of M&E systems in both new-build and refurbishment projects. They will have contributed significantly to pre-construction activities on major projects, ideally involving hydrogen systems, industrial piping, heat pumps, HVAC, thermal systems and mechanical energy-efficiency interventions.

Education

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BEng/MEng), HNC or equivalent.

Professional Experience

  • Minimum 10 years in mechanical engineering across industrial, commercial or public-sector environments.
  • Proven track record delivering full lifecycle EPC projects from concept to construction.
  • Experience with several of the following technologies:
  • Hydrogen systems and industrial piping
  • Commercial & industrial HVAC and heat pump systems
  • Thermal energy systems and energy-efficiency retrofits
  • Low-carbon heat network retrofits
  • Behind-the-meter decarbonisation technologies
  • Strong understanding of mechanical standards (e.g., CIBSE, ASHRAE, ISO).
  • Proficiency with engineering software tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, IES or BIM platforms.

Desirable

  • Experience in energy-performance contracting or ESCO models.
  • Knowledge of UK building regulations and sustainability frameworks such as BREEAM or LEED.
  • Exposure to digital-twin technologies or smart-building systems.
