Applied Physics Specialist
Job Description
Posted on: June 19, 2026
Applied Physics Specialist (AI Training)About The Role What if your deep expertise in physics could directly shape how AI understands the physical world — ensuring it respects the fundamental laws that govern reality? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test cutting-edge AI models on university and research-level physics, exposing the gaps in their reasoning so they can be fixed. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for researchers and specialists who want to stay sharp, work independently, and make a real impact on the future of AI — without leaving their area of expertise.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Design Advanced Problems — Craft challenging, open-ended physics problems at PhD qualifying exam level, requiring multi-step logical reasoning and rigorous mathematical derivation across domains like quantum mechanics, electromagnetism, and thermodynamics
- Author Ground-Truth Solutions — Develop precise, step-by-step "golden responses" where every physical constant, unit conversion, and logical step is exactly right
- Audit AI Reasoning — Evaluate AI-generated simulations, proofs, and derivations for physical consistency — identifying where models "hallucinate" physics that violates first principles
- Refine Model Behaviour — Provide structured, expert feedback that helps AI systems reason correctly about boundary conditions, conservation laws, and the deep structure of physical reality
Who You Are
- Hold a PhD (completed or near-completion) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
- Have mastery across the core pillars of physics: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
- Write with exceptional clarity — able to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in structured, precise English
- Possess an uncompromising eye for detail: units, scientific notation, dimensional analysis, and the logical flow of a proof
- Self-motivated and comfortable working independently on an asynchronous schedule
- No prior AI or data annotation experience required
Nice to Have
- Experience with data annotation, data quality review, or scientific dataset evaluation
- Proficiency with computational tools such as Python (NumPy/SciPy), MATLAB, or COMSOL
- Background in research, academic publishing, or physics education
Why Join Us
- Work at the frontier of AI development alongside world-leading research labs
- Fully remote and flexible — work when and where suits you, on your own schedule
- Freelance autonomy with the substance of genuinely meaningful, high-level work
- Keep your physics knowledge sharp while contributing to something that matters beyond the lab
- Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
