Applied Physics
Job Description
Posted on: April 12, 2026
Applied Physics (AI Training)About The Role What if your deep expertise in physics could directly influence how AI understands the physical world — from quantum mechanics to thermodynamics — for millions of users and researchers worldwide? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test and improve cutting-edge Large Language Models on their grasp of physical reality. You'll design rigorous problems, expose where AI reasoning breaks down, and help build systems that genuinely respect the fundamental laws of the universe. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. No prior AI experience required — just an exceptional command of physics and the precision to match.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Design Advanced Problems — Craft open-ended, PhD qualifying-level physics problems that demand multi-step logical reasoning and rigorous mathematical derivation across domains like quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, and thermodynamics
- Author Ground-Truth Solutions — Write meticulous, step-by-step "golden responses" where every physical constant, unit conversion, and logical inference is exactly right
- Audit AI Reasoning — Evaluate AI-generated proofs, derivations, and simulations for physical consistency — identifying where models "hallucinate" physics that violates first principles
- Refine Model Behaviour — Provide structured, expert feedback to improve AI performance on physics-informed reasoning, including boundary conditions, conservation laws, and symmetry arguments
- Push the Frontier — Work on university- and research-level benchmarks that expose the real limits of what today's most advanced AI systems can and cannot do
Who You Are
- Holds a PhD (completed or near completion) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
- Deep mastery across the core pillars of physics: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
- Exceptionally precise — you notice unit mismatches, sign errors, and logical gaps that others miss
- Strong analytical writer — you can explain complex derivations and physical phenomena in clear, structured English
- Self-motivated and comfortable working independently on asynchronous, task-based assignments
- No prior AI or data annotation experience required
Nice to Have
- Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance workflows
- Proficiency with scientific computing tools such as Python (NumPy/SciPy), MATLAB, or COMSOL
- Background in research publication, academic instruction, or technical writing
- Familiarity with AI tools or large language models as an end user
Why Join Us
- Work on genuinely cutting-edge AI projects alongside world-leading research labs
- Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you
- Freelance autonomy with meaningful, intellectually stimulating work
- Direct, tangible impact on how AI systems reason about the physical world
- Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
