Why Remote Workers Are Choosing Portugal for the Ultimate Work-Life Balance

Therese Mascardo was fed up with the hustle of Los Angeles life. As a licensed clinical psychologist, she was overwhelmed, seeing around 40 clients a week and enduring long commutes. Feeling the pressure to maintain her lifestyle, she sought a change.

Portugal frequently appeared on lists of top destinations for digital nomads, a term for those who work remotely from various locations. Since 2007, Portugal has offered a visa for non-EU workers, allowing them to live in the country while working remotely. In 2018, Mascardo made the leap to Lisbon, gradually reducing her workload to focus on a more balanced life, all while enjoying the affordability of the city. She also appreciated the safety Portugal offered compared to the U.S., especially regarding gun violence.

The pandemic changed the work landscape, giving many the freedom to choose where to live. However, as companies began calling employees back to offices, a divide emerged between those living the digital nomad dream and those returning to the daily grind.

Portugal has seen an influx of digital nomads, especially after the pandemic, with estimates suggesting around 16,000 in Lisbon alone. The D8 visa, introduced in 2022, allows non-EU citizens with remote jobs to live in Portugal for a year, with a pathway to permanent residency.

Historically, the country has attracted foreign workers through generous tax structures and easier visa requirements, which revitalized cities like Porto. However, this boom has had downsides. An increase in foreign workers has driven up housing costs, causing frustration among locals. Estimates suggest an 8.5% increase in housing prices attributed to wealthier foreign residents, aggravating the existing housing crisis.

As more digital nomads flock to Portugal, there are growing concerns about the impact on local residents. Policymakers face the challenge of balancing the benefits of attracting skilled workers while ensuring affordability for locals.
