Remote Job Adverts Hit Lowest Point Since March 2020
Remote job adverts fell to their lowest level since March 2020 as UK employers appear to be seeking greater office presence. According to figures in the latest UK Job Market Report by jobs site Adzuna, in December there were 45,581 advertised remote roles, down 42% year-on-year. At the same time, office-based job adverts rose and hybrid roles continue to increase steadily, suggesting the willingness for some form of flexible working is still there.
The Shift Toward Hybrid Work Models
While many employers are wanting employees to move away from the remote working precedent set during the Covid period, there is still a need for a hybrid working element. In fact, many employers still see it as key for attracting top talent, many of whom are almost insistent on having some form of home working as part of their working arrangements.
Overall Job Market Trends and Competition
Overall UK job vacancies declined for a sixth consecutive month, dropping 3.84% in December, and over 15% when compared with December 2024. The fall in job vacancies has increased competition for roles with an estimated 2.3 jobseekers vying for every role.
Factors Driving the Decline in Job Opportunities
Continued stubborn inflation, ongoing economic uncertainty and increasing adoption of AI technologies are all thought to be having an impact on the decrease in job opportunities in the UK employment market.
