The African Futures Lab (AfaLab) is hiring a Communication Lead to drive its communications strategy and amplify its work on racial justice, reparations, gender rights, climate justice, and socio-economic inequalities across Africa and Europe. This remote role is perfect for a strategic communicator passionate about social change.

AfaLab, founded by two Black women after the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, focuses on advancing racial and reparatory justice. As the African Union Decade of Reparations (2026–2036) begins, the organization is expanding its advocacy and evidence-based dialogue.

About the Role

The Communication Lead will implement AfaLab's communications strategy, combining strategic leadership with hands-on delivery. You'll work closely with the Executive Director and program teams to craft compelling narratives, manage digital platforms, and support advocacy goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Communications Planning: Lead strategy implementation, develop annual/quarterly plans, manage editorial calendars, and oversee website, newsletter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
  • Content Creation: Produce high-quality written and visual content, develop storytelling campaigns, and translate complex research into accessible messages.
  • Media Engagement: Build relationships with journalists, create press releases, and identify media opportunities.
  • Research Communication: Translate research findings into impactful communication strategies and measure impact through analytics.

Qualifications & Skills

Ideal candidates will have:

  • A master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Political Science, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • At least 5 years of professional communications experience
  • Experience with communications strategies, campaigns, and research/policy communication
  • Strong skills in writing, digital storytelling, social media management, and analytics
  • Proficiency in Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and video editing tools
  • Excellent English and professional-level French (written and spoken)
